Maria João Pires is a “huge soul who creates life from the tips of her fingers” (L’écho).
She played a recital at the 2021 Festival and this evening, the Portuguese pianist will perform with the prestigious Monte-Carlo Philharmonic, conducted by Kazuki Yamada.
Adulated the world over for her updated take on Mozart and Schubert, Viennese music naturally looms large over this year’s performance. Between Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 and the magical overture of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, she will treat us to her keen, pared-down interpretation of Mozart’s Piano concerto No. 9, famed for its emphasis on the soloist and the modernity of its orchestral construction.
