BACH, SAINT MATTHEW PASSION
Bach's masterpiece, the Passion according to St. Matthew , was composed around 1727 and brings together a big orchestra, a choir split into two ensembles and solo singers. It narrates Christ's suffering in the last days of his life, alternating narratives, airs and big choral sections, bringing everything together in a glorious communion.
It takes all of Bach 's genius, with an exceptionally diverse range of characters, rhythms and instrumentation to keep the audience on the edge of their seats for this sacred opera, transcended by the performance of the Swiss conductor Michel Corboz. He founded the Ensemble vocal et instrumental de Lausanne fifty years ago and is one of the world's greatest specialists in Baroque music, performed with the passion and intense rather than the musicological severity of the old school.
