Bach, St John Passion
evening
One of the annual highlights of the Easter Festival is the performance of one of Bach’s two Passions, giving an opportunity for the best ensembles of early music to shine.
This year, conductor Andrea Marcon brings a singing ensemble together with the Cetra Barockorchestra all the way from Basle, the European capital of Baroque music, for a lively, authentic performance. The St John Passion is truly a sacred masterpiece, combining a large-scale orchestra and choir, that alternate between solo voices and fervent Lutheran chorales to depict Christ’s suffering with such veracity. Furthermore, this monument of Western music is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year!
