Maria João Pires
The very incarnation of her art.
Pianist Maria Joao Pires is the very incarnation of her art. She plays like a skilled artisan, her signature clear, colourful touch has brought her to the very top of her profession. This rare stage appearance will see her open with Schubert’s Sonata n°13. Composed when he was in his early twenties, it is one of Schubert’s most popular, joy-filled and spontaneous pieces.
She will then move on to Debussy’s Suite bergamasque, another piece by a youthful composer, that reveals soft textures and sparkling high notes. Beethoven’s Sonata opus 111 will bring a graver tone to the proceedings, a piece Thomas Mann referred to as “a farewell to the Sonata”, as the composer, plagued by deafness, invented an entirely new, volcanic soundscape. A recital at the crossroads of fervour and spontaneity.
