Jordi Savall, Le Concert des Nations

For Holy Week, Jordi Savall dedicates a concert to Christ with two pieces written at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries respectively: Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of our Saviour on the Cross and Beethoven’s Christ on the Mount of Olives, Op. 85.
Jordi Savall, the gold standard in Western Early music has, in recent years, turned his attention to more “recent” compositions and not long ago performed a full cycle of Beethoven’s Symphonies. He approaches the classical repertoire with the same sense of detail and the same trademark interest in the historical context of the pieces. Many versions of this poignant composition have been performed (we will be hearing voice, choir and orchestra). Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of our Saviour focuses on Christ’s last moments on the Cross, while Beethoven tells the story of the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
