Wiener Symphoniker

Aix-en-Provence Easter festival in 2014 will again be staging Bach's Saint John Passion, a deeply dramatic piece. The 2013 edition provided the opportunity to hear Laurence Equilbey, accentus and musicians from the Concerto Köln. This year, Austrians are coming to defend Bach's piece: the Wiener Symphoniker (the oldest of Vienna's orchestras) and their historic partner, the Wiener Singverein. And to lead these musicians is a conductor with roots in the baroque: Giovanni Antonini, one of Cécilia Bartoli's favourite conductors.
The soloists are of an equally high calibre: the soprano Klara Ek, who has worked with all of the big-name baroque ensembles, the mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink who needs no introduction, and the men, the Vienna-born Johannes Chum and Hanno Müller-Brachmann who has been accompanied by Bach since his adolescence.
