Verdi, Requiem

Joshua Weilerstein, Renaud Capuçon
Symphonic Sacred music
Sunday 29 March - 8:30 pm
Grand Théâtre de Provence

Conductor Gianandrea Noseda does not stray from his repertoire at the head of the Orchestra and Choir of the Zurich Opera with Verdi’s Requiem, a gripping work, filled with contrasts.

Gianandrea Noseda is very familiar with this piece as he has performed it many times with various orchestras and sees Verdi’s Requiem as “the composer’s final attempt to get closer to God”. Verdi used all of the means at his disposal, intimately fusing a certain spiritual momentum with an approach that is almost operatic at times which gives the piece a truly unique feel. This performance marks the Italian conductor’s return to Aix after a ten year gap in which he became General Musical Director of the Zurich Opera House.
