Unlike some of the music world’s more overexposed stars, Eric Lu cultivates an inner expressiveness that leaves space for a more poetic vision and a feeling for the musical line. These rare qualities recently saw him win the First Prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition.

Eric Lu is one of the rare pianists to have come away with the first prize in two of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions, the Leeds in 2018 and the Chopin in 2025. The Romantic and post-Romantic periods form the core of his repertoire, and Lu is particularly attached to Chopin (surprise!) as well as to Schubert, of whose work he has produced two masterful recordings. In addition to Chopin’s majestic Polonaise-Fantaisie Op. 61 and his deeply melancholic Nocturne No. 20 in C sharp minor, Lu will also perform Rachmaninov’s Preludes. Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op. 15, Scenes of Childhood will provide a counterpoint to the second movement of Brahms’ String Sextet No. 1 that he transcribed for his friend Clara Schumann.
