Teodor Currentzis
The electrifying Teodor Currentzis and the Utopia orchestra and choir will bring this year’s performance of the St Matthew Passion to life.
Teodor Currentzis is known for his full and total commitment as well as his penchant for dramatic readings of the works of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Mahler and Shostakovich. When performing Bach (as in Salzburg in 2024) or Rameau (as in his gripping 2025 performance of Castor and Pollux at the Opéra de Paris), he does not restrict himself to historically informed interpretations. While he does not disregard the past, he nevertheless takes great care to bring a certain theatricality to the pieces, highlighting the contrasts. The inner tragedy of the St Matthew Passion is particularly well suited to this type of reading. Currentzis will be accompanied by a group of singers of the first order with a blend of specialists such as Ludwig Mittelhammer and other performers closer to his own universe, like Iveta Simonyan and Yulia Vakula.
